Easily one of the most iconic and recognizable cities in the US and the world. Some factoids of the city for those who do not live there. As most would know it is commonly referred to as the “Windy City”. The history is rich and varied, and has a very diverse community and amazing neighborhoods. It also well known for its varied architectural works - quite on the edge compared to other US cities. And most important - (tongue in cheek) it gave us pinball and the Twinkie!
PARKS
The most famous park is Millennium Park in Chicago. It is part of the famous LOOP area of Chicago. The park itself is not that large, approximately 25 acres in size. It also has the famous BEAN which will be discussed below. What is best about the park is the man free programs it hosts in a variety of manner - such as tours, concerts, and other programs. The park actually opened quite recently in 2004 only. This park falls under the umbrella of the much larger and less well know park for visitors Grant Park. Lets do a quick rundown of the main features of the park which interest a sugar date for the day.
See a concert at the Pavilion. Or, stand and take a selfie at the famous “THE BEAN”. If you want to see some art and video, there is always the crown fountain. And within the park there is a free garden called the Lurie Garden. Surprisingly, or perhaps not, it was the top tourist location to be visited in the city. My guess is because of the BEAN - which has been quite the draw for the selfies.
ART GALLERY
How good is the art gallery in Chicago compared to the other top US cities? Most agree, quite good in fact. It is called the Art Institute of Chicago. It is certainly one of the best in the world some would argue. As well, the design of the building is considered a landmark. Some factoids about the gallery. It was founded in 1879. In terms of its collection, it is quite vast approximately 301,000 works of art in the museum. Almost all backgrounds and histories can be found here - American, Asian, African, and European.
When on your sugar date, the gallery offer free tours, as well as programs that can offer some education if you want to delve even further on your date. Don’t forget to download the gallery’s app if you want to go it alone with you and your date on your visit. As well, when your legs get tired, there are also several spots in the gallery to grab a snack, a bigger meal, or even a few drinks at their piano bar. PIER
If galleries are not on the menu for a first time date, then if a good day, and you want to spend it in the outdoors - why not try the NAVY PIER. The name comes from honouring former US navy vets in World War 1. Its original use was a dock for a variety of ships. Later, in the early 90’s it was reborn for a place of fun and activity for the residents of the city. When you arrive there, you will notice its quite big - over 50 acres. It also houses quite a few different items to make a date last a long day. You will find the customary shops, and various restaurants. However, there are a few interesting things to do and find - such as the Chicago Shakespeare theatre which is always interesting to watch with your date. Also, as many major cities have there is a large Ferris wheel you can take, which will give you great views of the city.
ARCHITECTURE
Similar to NYC there are quite a few standout pieces of architecture. A good way to stroll the city, learn and see architectural wonders. Let’s name a few and show what you can do on a date here. First would be the Sears Tower, now know as the Willis Tower. Famous because it was at one time the tallest building in the world. You can go up the building and try its Sky deck which has the floors made of glass. Quite the experience.
Also other mentions include the John Hancock Building. You can tell it by its all black color, X’s designed look, and it has its own observation deck as well. Switching gears a bit, if you are into residential design, it starts and stops with Frank Lloyd Wright. You can visit the homes he has designed. Another great master here to visit would be Mies van der Rohe which has become a landmark in Chicago.
ZOO ANYONE?
Unlike many cities in the US, Chicago has two major zoos, and each one would tell you they are better than the other. What we can tell you is that each offer something that the other doesn’t so it does make an interesting day date. Let’s take a look shall we. The LINCOLN ZOO, surprisingly dates way back, going back to 1868. This makes it one of the oldest zoos in the US. It is a fairly large park at over 35 acres, and they boast it has over 200 different species. Quite the diversity. Best, its free. Next up would be the much larger BROOKFIELD ZOO. This is a very highly rated zoo. Most zoo goers have raved about the establishment. Its not too far from Chicago, a short ride to its namesake suburb. The size of the zoo is quite large. It comprises in total acreage over 230 acres. The zoo boasts, and rightfully so, of having over 2,100 different types of animals. They like to pride themselves on their unique and outside the box thinking for their animal exhibits and enclosures. The Zoo’s goal is its breeding program and naturally, its conservation program. Both goals are to increase awareness of the species and its environment.
CHICAGO RIVER WALK
Most tourists are told and with good reason to go to the boardwalk. Its also a good way to spend a few hours or the day with a sugar date. What is it? Its a very pretty walking area along the Chicago waterfront. It’s not that long - but long rough for most, at 1.2 miles. Locals call this the second waterfront, Lake Michigan is the first for you factoids - and is part of Chicago’s famous LOOP Area. What can you find here for your sugar date? As with many world class promenades - a litany of restaurants, bars, and some art galleries. You can also rent a boat for you and your date.
